Fascism Anyone

The 14 Characteristics of Fascism

Here is a list of the characteristic features of Fascism, the “common threads” of Fascist governance, as drawn out by Laurence W. Britt from his analyses of seven Fascist regimes (Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, Franco’s Spain, Salazar’s Portugal, Papadopoulos’s Greece, Pinochet’s Chile, and Suharto’s Indonesia):

1. Powerful and continuing expressions of nationalism,
2. Disdain for the importance of human rights,
3. Identification of enemies/scapegoats as a unifying cause,
4. The supremacy of the military/avid militarism,
5. Rampant sexism,
6. A controlled mass media,
7. Obsession with national security,
8. Religion and ruling elite tied together,
9. Power of corporations protected,
10. Power of labor suppressed or eliminated,
11. Disdain and suppression of intellectuals and the arts,
12. Obsession with crime and punishment,
13. Rampant cronyism and corruption, and
14. Fraudulent elections.

Apart from being an exhaustive analysis of Fascism, the above list provides us with some of the guidelines to evaluate the politics of the present day regimes. Whereas it might be hard to trace each and every feature of Fascism in modern governments, the presence of even some of them, primarily a majority of them, says a lot.

  1. Sizwe Dube Says:

Just a thought. You glorify someone like Jacob Zuma, yet he and his ilk are described perfectly by all 14 of these characteristics. This is, however, par for the course when it comes to african “communists”. Once in power, they’re living it up in huge mansions, driving 3 or 4 BMW’s, sending their kids to private schools etc etc etc. I’ve seen Vavi, Nzimande and Zuma’s houses and cars. Capitalism is alive and well, especially amongst your so-called heroes. They do nothing for the people except spew mindless rhetoric. Then again, is the communist manifesto not all rhetoric. Communism doesn’t work, because mankind is selfish and obsessed with self improvement. Get over it.

As an aside, I wish they would stop calling everyone “comrade”. Apartheid is over and this is africa, not russia. Get a new catch phrase. Repeating it all parrot-fashion. The ANC/ANCYL/SACP way!
